Fishing Chair – what’s your type?
It does not matter what type of fishing you do, a fishing chair is an essential for all occasions. It does not matter if you are out deep sea fishing, fishing on a reef, marlin fishing off of a boat, high altitude fishing for trout, creek fishing or fishing on a nice sunny day on the beach, you need a good place to sit and rest while keeping alert to fishing.
The right chair for the right occasion is something you should always think about. Fishing off of a boat and having a fishing chair that is very ‘flimsy’ and light than if a bit of swell comes and hits the boat you could find yourself on the floor of your boat after your chair breaks. This is something that can very easily happen if the wrong chair is purchased.
We are going to go through a number of fishing chair types and what type of fishing you would use that type of chair for.
Portable Fishing Chairs:
If you are going fishing and you are restricted in the amount of gear you can bring, this can be caused by you having to walk to your location and don’t want to carry as much, out camping and need something light, or have restriction due to space in your vehicle or boat than you still have many options that will meet your needs with a chair.
There is the ‘tripod style’ fishing chair which is basically a light weight stool which consists of folding support bars and a triangular seat. These are great options for carrying with when you have a distance to walk to get to one of those hidden secret fishing locations while keeping you somewhat elevated.
If you don’t mind being close to the ground however (preferably dry ground) for the same occasion you can also go for the ‘crazy creek style’ or ‘thermarest chairs’. These chairs are great and as they are light weight and very easy to carry.
Folding Fishing Chairs:
Folding fishing chairs are also portable, however they are not as easy to carry a distance as they are a lot more sturdy, they are not the option for you if you need to carry light. If you are fishing from a spot on a lake, on a jetty, a beach or from a pier than the best basic chair for you to fish on would be the ‘quad chairs’. They are very inexpensive, comfy, relaxing and can have cup holders and most importantly they can fold up and easily be stored in the trunk of your car, back of your ute or even in the backseat of a care. They are very easy to carry short distances, so if you only have to walk a short distance with a rode and a tackle box than this chair might be an option for you. If you have a cooler with some nice cool beverages than the quad chair is for you. They are normal chair height so perfect if you will be sitting for hours, and you can also cast while sitting in them.
Another option for the same purpose if you are fishing from a jetty, pier or lake fishing is a sporting event or picnic style chair. This is because they normally are a lot more comfortable and have the additions you would want while fishing. The chair should fold up to a neat shape and suitable weight. A few other features that some of these chairs can have can be adjustable sun shading, adjustable straps for carrying, cup holders (bottle holders), packets for items such as magazines, books, phones, sun cream, etc., insulated cooler sections or parts. However chairs made specifically for fishing could also include features like adjustable height and angle recline options, a table for rigging gear and organizing and cutting bait, and rod holders.
Portable Ice Fishing Chairs:
Believe it or not there are specially designed fishing chairs for people who want to go ice fishing. They normally have features such as sturdy handles and hinges that are rust resistant and a sub-zero rated padded foam covering the seat as this will help deal with the moisture and cold from ice fishing. However as this description doesn’t describe too much different to a normally design chair, the most important part of any ice fishing chair is the storage. Storage is a very important part for keeping tackle organized and easily accessible. A chair with foam padding in the storage will help keep your jigs, hooks and leader very well organized without causing a mess. There should be separate compartments to help store bait and one with 2 – 3 inches or so deep so it can be used to store bait, lures and larger items and an area to store an ice rod. And finally there should always be an area for you to store your catch! Without this the chair isn’t as useful!
Fishing Chairs for every fishing occasion:
There is a fishing chair that suits every occasion and location. There are many different designs and brands, and it is a good idea to have a look at the full range of features of a number of different types of chairs to ensure you choose one that is going to meet your needs.
